Olga Echevskaya, Novosibirsk State University.
Yana Krupets, Samara State University.
The course “Debating Subjectivity: Critical Introduction to Identity Studies” examines critical theoretical perspectives on identity concept and identity-related issues in social sciences. It includes an introduction to constructivist, feminist, psychoanalytical, postcolonial and cultural studies critical debate.
Throughout the course, we aim to demonstrate two important understandings of identity, and some important consequences of these understandings. On the one hand, identity is a social construct, which is being performed in everyday interactions, i.e., is being constructed, negotiated, changed and re-defined in a variety of everyday situations. On the other hand, identity is a very ideological and political project – this means that we need to consider media, political and virtual spaces as the fields of identity politics and struggles, as well as meanings, images and technologies of its representation.
